Welcome to Sheffield Records Online Probate Index

Prior to 1858 the granting of probate was carried out by ecclesiastical or church courts but subsequently became a civil matter. This database contains details of civil probate indexes for people who were living in Sheffield, Rotherham, Ecclesfield and surrounding areas at the time of their death. It is fed by records which were entered as part of the Yorks Probate Index project and contains the following data items:

testator name, date of death, occupation, effects, executor name(s), date of probate and the full text of the probate index.

The index which can be searched by testator surname, forename, year of death and abode will be added to on an ongoing basis for the foreseeable future.

Full copies of any Wills located in the index can be obtained from the York Probate Registry. The current cost is £5 per copy irrespective of the number of pages.
