.:: 1848 West Riding Poll ::.
On December 14th and 15th, 1848 an election was held to determine the member of Parliament for the West Riding, the previous incumbent, Lord Morpeth, having gone to the House of Lords following the death of his father, the Earl of Carlisle.

The candidates standing in the election were Edmund Denison, Esq. representing the Tories and Sir Culling Eardley for the Whigs (Liberals).

The database includes the name of all those within the Sheffield and Rotherham Polling Districts who were eligible to vote, their residence at the time, and who they voted for.

The election was won by Edmund Denison with a majority of 2,948 votes. The actual total votes cast was Denison: 14,743, Eardley: 11,795.
